How does the scoring work on TLC's "Four Weddings"?

I know that the brides score each other's weddings across various categories, but every episode the announcer mentions there's some kind of safeguard to prevent any one bride from just rating all the others zero and I dunno, I guess the way he phrases it is confusing or something, because I've never got that part. What's going on?
