Pigeon shooting problem?

i was shooting a pigeon in my garden i made sure the bullet would hit the ground with in the boundaries of my garden if i missed it. In this case i hit it in its back due it moving at the last minute the pigeon flew of, have i commited any offence? and do you think the pigeon is seriously injured it seemed to fly of strongly dont like the idea of it suffering.
