Is it normal for a male pigeon to live in our house?

pigeon are an odd bird, i had one for years as a kid, he showed up one day and stayed the rest of his life, we only caged him when he came in for the night, this is an experience, roll with it, let him do his thing, let his wings grow in, he could be a friend for years.
