Do birds fly just for pleasure sometimes, or is there always a reason?

I had always assumed a bird's life to be somewhat short and brutal, constantly struggling to survive, but today I observed a wood pigeon doing a u-turn mid flight as if it suddenly couldn't be bothered. So if there is no territory, food or mating issue, do they just think I'll take a quick turn around the block for something to do?
