Term used to describe arranged battles? (revolutionary war period)?

I am trying to find the term used to describe battles arranged by generals of the opposing sides. I am sure the term exist but it is not on the top of my head. For example, there were a few generals in the revolutionary war time who agreed with each other via pigeons and mail to set a planned battle.
